Katherine -N- Robbie at Green Pastures

from Katherine:
Leading up to my wedding, I was very focused on whether this or that aspect would look beautiful. Planning a wedding has that affect on most people. How can you not focus on the appearance after you have looked through thousands of wedding photos, you have picked your accessories, your dress, your nails, your hair, your flowers, your wedding stationary, and you have choreographed your first dance. But, the day of, all that mattered to me was how it felt walk down the aisle with my mother and father, hold my husband’s hands during the ceremony, read my vows, dance for the first time as husband and wife, laugh with my friends and family, and celebrate with my community. Now that the wedding is over, I am excited to see how everything looked, but I am so much more excited to see our photos so that I can relive the moments captured by them.
I am so grateful for all of the vendors we worked with. They all did a fantastic job. What I think made our experience exceptional with our vendors is that we chose people and companies whose taste and products we loved and respected. It was freeing to know we could trust their taste and not feel the need to micromanage our vendors.

Katie and Greg's rainy day wedding at Green Pastures.

My fondest memory day of was how smoothly everything went, the food, and  the entertainment- we love Encore and they didn't disappoint! Also the butterflys!! We were so lucky with the weather and above all the whole event was so fun and we really got to enjoy it! The ceremony was better than I could have ever imagined or planned and the floral decorations turned out amazing!
Planning was a breeze because every one of our vendors was so easy to work with, which was such a blessing since we were planning it all from out of town!

Lauren -N- Nik / Green Pastures Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Lauren and Nik's wedding was so powerful and faithful, I loved photographing their emotional day!

I love to do this little exercise with couples after their wedding day. We photographed their big day and nearly 2 months later they are presented with their images on the blog. Just before, I ask them to write a recap about what they loved about the wedding. Each couple is so unique. In this case both Lauren and Nik took time separately to recap their wedding day from each of their perspectives. I encourage all couples to do this! What a wonderful gift it is for you, in 10 and 20 years, your memories will fade, but if you take the time to write down your memories now or even record (that's what we did) then you'll have those memories and your album with your favorite moments.

Every year on our anniversary we get to listen to our almost 10 years younger selves recap our wedding day and the few days preceding. I'm glad we have that, it's such a delightful time capsule.

From Lauren:

I was remarkably calm and cool on the day of the wedding until....

While waiting to process, standing in the stairwell, the Ave Maria violin solo started.  It moved me to tears, and my Dad eventually saw and gave me his handkerchief to carry (which moved me to more tears).  Then, when I was singing to Nik after our vows, he started crying and I gave the handkerchief to him (we’re all family now!).
The music at the ceremony is what really made it feel sacred and transcendent for me… I will never forget walking down the aisle to the joyous choir and strings, trembling while trying to smile through tears, seeing faces and catching eyes of beloved friends and family, there to celebrate and bless the occasion.  It was so powerful I almost didn't even notice Nik until I was nearly at his side!

We had planned all the details of the reception to be outside, on the lovely expansive South lawn of Green Pastures.  From the placement of each cocktail table to the stringing of lights in the trees, the placement of the band and dance floor, etc., we had planned where everything wouldbe.

So, of course, torrential rains poured down just after the ceremony as we were on our way there. (Our 1940 Cadillac was leaking water from the windshield and I was nervous riding in the pouring rain, across the bridge. Good thing the driver reassured us this was normal as he wiped off the drops that scurried down the dash!)

At Green Pastures, everything was therefore set up inside (plan B), and we had NO idea where anything would be. Even as we were introduced to all the guests, I had no idea where we were supposed to sit to eat … but, thanks to the Green Pastures' amazing staff,  it all went off as if it HAD been plan A, and no one was the wiser.

As my cousin Dana told me, rain on your wedding day is good luck, but rain on your wedding day IN TEXAS is VERY GOOD luck.  (I'll take it.)

During our first dance, I kept stepping on my dress beneath me.  I was just praying that I wouldn’t trip myself and fall flat on my face! After I changed into my shorter dress, I went to dance with Nik and it turned into an unplanned performance, when everyone turned to watch us dance!  I was too happy to care (but the song did seem really loooong).

All our vendors were great- very professional, with great service, and we were very happy with the final products, especially the band, thebridesmaid’s bouquets and the floral table arrangements, and the food/cakes.

From Nik:
When I thought about getting ready for the wedding I thought, "Hey, it'll be a piece of cake I'll just throw my tux on and show up at the church." They day of the wedding I was rushing around to get everything in order and get out the door. I though it would be best just to go to the church and get ready there. When I got there and started getting ready, I was so nervous I needed help buttoning my shirt and getting my tie right.
While the wedding party was in the foray waiting to walk down the aisle I was very nervous about accidentally seeing Lauren before the ceremony. My groomsmen told me they would watch out for me. I saw white out of the corner on at least two occasions only for my groomsmen to tell me I was imagining it.
Both Lauren and I were pretty nervous about the rain scheduled for that day, but it turned out like we had planned it. It really couldn't have turned out better. We got a good number of photos outside, when it started raining. We hurried to the car, only to have it stop raining as soon as we arrived at Green Pastures. My best man was there with umbrellas ready, just in case.
I was also very nervous about this first dance. Earlier in the day I learned that the dress took more care not to step on than I had previously envisioned. Even so we had a very musical dance. I was worried that we might get bored or not have much to do out there, but it went by in a flash and we both had a great time with it. For the second dance neither of us had planned that. Everyone just cleared the dance floor like it had been planned and Lauren and I just went with it. The last dance we had was a great surprise. As you know we met dancing and have a lot of friends in the dance community. As our friends came up to "cut in" on that last dance, I think that made Lauren and I feel pretty special, since we weren't expecting it at all.
It really hard to say what my favorite things were about the wedding. The time was unforgettable and was the best day of my life. My friends and family were all so supportive and it was a special thing to be surrounded by so many people that we've been blessed with in our lives. It was really the help and contributions of all of our friends and family that made the celebration so special.
There are so many more things I could write about. If you would like to know anything more, please let me know.

Lauren -N- Chris - Green Pastures - brunch wedding in early September

from Lauren:

Chris and I met while working in the same courthouse in Austin, Texas, which is why it just felt right to have the judge who Chris worked for marry us at Green Pastures nearly 5 years to the day we first met.  It made the wedding even more special to have our friends play the ceremony music, including "Across the Universe," when I walked down the aisle.  There were so many special moments throughout the day, but the best part was just getting to celebrate with so many friends and family all in one place.

Kelly -N- Stephen / Green Pastures Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Our wedding was in the planning stages for quite awhile - we were engaged for over two years (since 9/18/10) before our big day.  I really wanted the event to reflect a combination of our personalities - casual, laid back, and natural - but still special.  I knew Green Pastures was the perfect location because it felt like coming to someone's home rather than a stark event center.  It felt warm and cozy, despite still being able to accommodate our 130 guests.

The colors (teal and yellow) actually were inspired by the colors of my shoes.  I was shopping just a month or two after our engagement, and I fell in love with these polka-dot Seychelles shoes.  At the time, I wasn't looking for wedding shoes, but these were perfect.  I used them to help pick out the bridesmaids dress color and the yellow ties for the guys.
Going with the "natural" look, Bouquets of Austin did our floral arrangements and did an absolutely perfect job.  I wanted lots of color, and a "gathered" look.  I pretty much gave them a blank slate and they didn't disappoint!  It was wonderful to walk into the room at Green Pastures and be greeted by the smell and sight of our beautiful bouquets!  A few of my other favorite details: my garter, knitted by one of my bridesmaids, Trisha; the cake-topper of two teal lovebirds, custom ordered from Orly Design on Etsy; and the guys' Texas cuff links, ordered online from who-knows-where by Stephen.
Of course, it threatened rain all day on Saturday, and ended up pouring right during the window of time our ceremony was supposed to be outside.  Stephen and I both love the outdoors, and it was a bit of a bummer to not get to have the ceremony under the beautiful live oak trees at Green Pastures.  But, I do have to say that the indoor ceremony was intimate and beautiful, and was everything we wanted.  We didn't know what our officiant was going to say, and his speech was perfect.  Again, the folks at Bouquets of Austin really did a wonderful job accommodating the last-minute rain changes!  And the fact that it rained made our after-ceremony photo session even more intimate because all the guests were still inside.  I thought it was so great that we randomly found that UT umbrella to use in the pictures - perfect touch!
And of course, there was plenty of dancing!  That might have been the most important thing to me: there had to be dancing!  Heck we even did Gangnam Style. If anything it just went by way too quickly.
Finally, we got to make our get-away in an awesome teal Cadillac from Vintage Rides of Austin.  Even though our hotel was only about 5 minutes down the road, the driver (who happened to also be the owner, Ed) took us for a spin through downtown.  It was really a magical way to end our night!  We got to have a little time to just bask in all that had just happened.  People waved to us and shouted congratulations as we cruised down the streets.  It was a perfect ending to a perfect night!  Our only regret: hopping on a plane the next morning at 10am to head back to North Carolina.  A leisurely after-wedding brunch might have been nice :-)

Amy -N- Keith / Green Pastures Wedding / Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Amy and Keith, two of my most favorite people in the world! Amy and I met last year, but as it turns out we actually met WAY before that at a portfolio viewing at Sanders/Wingo. They are both amazing, funny, fun people and I'm glad I know them. Definitely friends now!

Their wedding was held at Green Pastures in late October, Austin was still reeling from the drought from the summer and it was still warm. The biggest advantage was the color of the bamboo in the images. It looked so beautiful at this stage during the summer. The Fig trees, while thin, photographed beautifully! I loved everything about this wedding, even the group shots. As you may know, the group shots (or formal shots) are often tedious and time consuming. Couples can look stressed and tired during this time.  Not these guys! They look casual and comfortable. There is even a frame where all of the members of the family are yelling for their missing member and the groom looks amused. It was a great day! Their flowers were done by Blooms and their DJ, Erik Klimek, got that house rocking and it didn't stop until the mother of the bride came to me and asked "how do I shut this thing down?" Now THAT is a good time!

The Powells were married at the end of 2008 but were unable to share it with most of their friends and family. Thir first wedding was quite last minute, save a trip back to Toi home in Isreal, it's quite an interesting story but I'm sure you're more interested in the pictures.
Toi and Richard were two of the most lovely people I've ever met, they were very appreciative and complimentary, they made us feel like family while we were there. They had a large collection of nieces and nephews, they were SO stinkin cute. We couldn't stay away from them. I hope they marry again next year and we're invited again ;)
All the best to you 2, I saved the bum picture for your own personal collection ;)
Also, as always you can see more images from their wedding on our facebook page at she-n-he photography and design.
Thanks for looking. See you soon.
